The largest private network of hospitals and clinics completely in Microsoft Azure

Summary of the project

The Penta Hospitals network consists of 13 polyclinics and 17 hospitals, which can be found in almost all regions of Slovakia.

With more than 10 000 employees, it is the largest private healthcare network in the Slovak Republic. By migrating its infrastructure to Microsoft Azure, it has not only gained a high level of flexibility, but has also increased its security.

Challenges and requirements

The company operated a heterogeneous server infrastructure divided into a hosting service and a significant number of physical servers located on-premise at various hospitals. At the same time, it was aware of the potential higher operating costs and other problems associated with the heterogeneity of that infrastructure.

In connection with the planned implementation of the new Next Generation Hospital Information System (NGHIS - Next Generation Hospital Information System - using Kubernetes solution), as well as due to the upcoming renewal of the HW infrastructure, the company underwent a comprehensive infrastructure analysis. The result was a total cost of ownership (TCO) calculation for Azure and a plan to migrate the infrastructure to the Microsoft Azure cloud environment.

Results and benefits

The goal of the project was to migrate all servers and applications where possible to Microsoft Azure and consolidate the company's infrastructure into the Microsoft Azure environment. The original terminal farms were replaced with a modern Windows Virtual Desktop solution.

As part of the migration, 15 new virtual servers were created (for Fortigate firewall, analyser and management, AD domain controller, for testing the deployment of new applications) and more than 50 existing virtual (and physical) servers were migrated using Azure Migrate. The WVD environment currently has 13 VMs.
